roseville-patio-2If you are considering a new patio or deck for your yard, a popular option is a paver patio.

Pavers make an excellent patio choice because of their lifespan, durability and appearance.

Homeowners can choose from several types of pavers. Pavers come in concrete, brick or stone.

Stone pavers — typically flagstone or fieldstone — lend a natural look to a patio and typically are the most expensive. They are extremely durable and stand up to the most extreme weather conditions.

Paving bricks are kiln-fired clay pavers, also very strong and durable. They are known to last a lifetime and are considered resistant to stains. Brick pavers has a rich, lasting color that will not fade.

Concrete pavers are made of molded concrete mixed with aggregate. They are generally the least expensive pavers used for patios or walkways. While sturdy, they do not generally last as long as brick or stone pavers.

Some concrete paving stones are manufactured to interlock, making them easy to install. Concrete pavers also don’t generally hold color as long as brick pavers, but there are sealants that can be applied to extend the life of concrete pavers.

Pavers are available in a variety of shapes, colors and styles. Typical paver bricks are 4 inches by 8 inches, but also come in 8 inch square styles.

Pavers come in many different colors, with some paver styles coming in different hues or complementary colors and installed side-by-side to provide a unique look.

Pavers can also be molded and shaped to provide an older appearance with rounded edges and corners.

Some advantages of using pavers instead of smooth or stamped concrete for a patio is that the space between pavers allows them to “give” under the pressure of contraction and expansion which can crack concrete.

Paver also are more easily maintained than concrete, which must be sealed and cleaned regularly. In case of damage paver patios can be easily repaired by simply removing broken pavers and replacing them, or pulling pavers out and replacing the sand and aggregate underneath.

Damaged concrete must have an entire section removed and replaced should it be damaged.

Also, concrete is known to settle, providing some pressure that can lead to cracking, but also affecting how water drains from it.

While pavers can shift, they also can be removed and replaced after adding to the base underneath them.
